About this Tool
A Fixed Deposit locks a lump sum with a bank for a fixed tenure at a guaranteed rate, compounded quarterly. This calculator estimates the maturity value and interest earned so you can compare tenures and rates before booking a deposit.
Common Use Cases
Compare Tenures
See how 1, 3 and 5-year deposits differ before locking in your money.
Rate Shopping
Compare bank offers side by side — small rate gaps compound into real money.
Emergency Fund Parking
Estimate returns on idle cash parked in short-term FDs or sweep-ins.
Senior Citizen Benefits
Factor in the extra 0.25–0.50% banks pay seniors by entering the higher rate.
Pro Tips
- !
Ladder Maturities
Split deposits across tenures so some money frees up every year without breaking FDs.
- !
Mind Premature Penalties
Breaking an FD early usually costs ~1% — keep emergency cash in savings instead.
- !
Check Tax Impact
FD interest is taxable; post-tax returns matter more than headline rates.
Examples
100,000 at 7% for 5 years
A 100,000 FD at 7% compounded quarterly for 5 years matures to about 141,478 with 41,478 interest.
- Quarterly rate = 7/400 = 0.0175 and quarters = 5 x 4 = 20.
- Maturity = 100,000 x 1.0175^20 = 100,000 x 1.414778 = 141,478 (rounded).
- Interest = 141,478 - 100,000 = 41,478 before tax and TDS.
500,000 at 7% for 5 years
A 500,000 FD at the same 7% for 5 years matures to about 707,389 with 207,389 interest.
- Same growth factor 1.414778: maturity = 500,000 x 1.414778 = 707,389 (rounded).
- Interest = 707,389 - 500,000 = 207,389, exactly 5x the 100,000 case.
- Breaking this FD early at a 1% penalty rate (6% instead of 7%) would cut maturity to about 673,427, losing roughly 33,962.
