The scale is uneven in ways that matter: one failed 3-credit course wipes out two A grades in equal courses. Converting percentages and 10-point CGPA

Indian students converting to the US scale usually need two hops: CGPA to percentage, then percentage to a 4.0 estimate. Under the common CBSE convention, percentage equals CGPA times 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.2 becomes 77.9 percent (8.2 times 9.5). That first hop is exact by convention; the second is only an estimate.

A rough linear rule used by several free converters is GPA equals percentage divided by 20, minus 1, mapping 85 percent to 3.25 and our 77.9 percent to about 2.9. Treat that as a planning number only. Real admissions offices use evaluation services with their own bands, so verify against your target university's published table before reporting anything official.

The symmetry comforts seniors, since one bad semester is equally diluted. But freshmen should hear the warning: grades earned early divide into every future average, so a weak first year at 2.5 over 30 credits forces years of 3.7-plus performance just to climb back to 3.4. Front-load effort while the denominator is small.

How to raise your GPA: the credit math
